IFPELAC and TotalEnergies together in the celebration of World Day for Safety and Health at Work

The Secretary of State for Youth and Employment (SEJE), through the Instituto de Formação Profissional e Estudos Laborais Alberto Cassimo (Institute for Vocational Training and Labor Studies – IFPELAC), and TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, as operator of the Mozambique LNG project, as part of the celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which is celebrated today, joined forces this morning, at the premises of IFPELAC, Delegation of Pemba, to reinforce the awareness of the trainees of this professional training institution, about the importance of safety and health at work.

On occasion, hundreds of trainees from IFPELAC attended a lecture given by Tércio Masseque, Vice-President for Health, Environment and Safety at TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, entitled Positive Culture of Safety and Health – A Sustainability Issue, which addressed topics such as consequences of a pathological and reactive culture for organizations and the role of the trainee in building a positive culture. In addition to the lecture, the students also had the opportunity to participate in a contest called “Identify the Danger”, which aimed, in a practical way, to identify situations that generate dangers for safety and health at work.

João Massingue, representative of IFPELAC, in Cabo Delgado, stated that “today, we would like to celebrate this important date for the world of work, for workers, for future workers such as these trainees and others. In our IFPELAC courses, we have subjects that deal with health and safety at work, but we agree it is important, on this special date, to join TotalEnergies, with whom we have an active partnership to train young Mozambicans in the most different areas and it is a large multinational, to gather their experience in these matters, thus reinforcing the skills of our trainees. For our own individual good, our families, our colleagues, it is essential that we make safety and health intrinsic elements of our actions.”

In turn, Tércio Masseque, Vice-President for Health, Environment and Safety at TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, said that: “this date reflects the importance that the world gives to safety and health at work. Safety and health at work must be incorporated into the organization’s strategy as well as into our day-to-day activities. They must arise as a way of being and living, and not as a set of rules to be followed on specific occasions. For TotalEnergies, safety is a daily battle that needs to be developed with humility and vigilance. We can never drop our guard with respect to safety. Safety is a value for us, it is a linchpin of our long-term viability, because we can only be sustainable if we are safe and reliable.”.

Masseque added: “Our employees are our most valuable resource. Protecting their health and that of the contractors working at our sites is our top priority.”.

Josefina Cristiano, trainee of the Bricklayer course, stated that: “I am very pleased and happy to know that today, April 28th, is World Day for HSST, which is Hygiene, Health, and Safety at Work. I didn’t even know about this date, but as of today I am aware. I am also aware that we must work safely, that we must wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to better maintain safety at work. So, I’m very happy to know that I must protect others and myself. I promise I will teach others that we must stay safe before going to work and that we must know how to wear and be in a work environment.”

In turn, Hamudine Chamo, graduating from the Carpentry course, stated that: “Today I learned many things, because I did not know that on April 28, 1969, in the United States of America, in the State of Virginia, a strong tragedy cost the lives of 78 miners, due to lack of HSST (Hygiene, Health and Safety at Work) policies and negligence”.

It should be noted that the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated this year in Mozambique, under the motto “Work Together to Build a Culture of Positive Safety and Health”.

It is a public institution that provides Vocational Training and Labor Studies, established in 2016, and supervised by the Secretary of State for Youth and Employment.
IFPELAC develops its activities throughout the national territory, through 11 Provincial Delegations, 25 Vocational Training Centers and 28 Mobile Professional Training Units. It has a total training capacity of 25,000 trainees per year.
This year, IFPELAC introduced a pilot phase, in Tete, the “In Work-Linked Training”, a regime that will allow training in a hybrid model, (among the training activities at the Instituto de Formação Profissional e Estudos Laborais Alberto Cassimo (IFPELAC) and in the Productive Sector).
