Mozambique LNG and ExxonMobil distribute 500 bicycles in mobility programme in Palma district

The Mozambique LNG project, operated by TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, and ExxonMobil Moçambique, Limitada recently concluded a mobility programme in Palma which included the distribution of 500 bicycles in 25 localities, training of mechanics and the installation of three bicycle repair shops in Quitunda, Mute and Quionga.

The initiative aims to increase mobility options using bicycles, which are accessible, environmentally responsible, and easy to maintain. Beneficiaries will thus be able to have easier access to various services, reducing travel costs and time.

According to the director of District Services for Health and Social Action, Vasco Baulene, “the project is more than welcome for our district because bicycles are an asset, they represent property to the people and they are a mean of transportation for many of the community’s daily activities such as going to the farm, school, hospital and to the local market.”

Laila Chilemba, vice president for Socio-economic Development at TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, added: ” We continue to implement our Pamoja Tunaweza initiative (Together We Can), although the Mozambique LNG project is in force majeure and its construction operations suspended. The Pamoja Tunaweza initiative aims at implementing sustainable socio-economic development activities in Cabo Delgdo, particularly in Palma and Mocímboa da Praia, to support the government’s efforts to normalize life in the province. We are looking forward to being able to contribute to the amplification of mobility, a fundamental factor for the well-being of the community as well as for the revitalization of the Palma district’s economy.”

Fernando Pegado, Public and Government Affairs Manager for ExxonMobil Moçambique, Limitada said, “ExxonMobil has seen firsthand how improving mobility conditions is critical in assisting communities support their livelihoods. This includes commute to school and transportation of goods to respective markets. We are pleased to have worked with Mozambikes in the distribution of these 500 bicycles in Palma district, and we look forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders in response to community needs.”
